About Ryan Ellis

The Update Angle is written by me, Ryan Ellis — a long-term Samsung Galaxy user turned independent technology writer. This page explains who I am, how I work, and why this site keeps its eye on the details most Galaxy coverage skips.

Who Writes This Site

I'm 33 and live in the suburbs outside Seattle, Washington. I've used Samsung Galaxy phones for most of my adult life — long enough to remember when a software update meant a short changelog and a reboot, and long enough to tell when an announcement and an actual rollout stop being the same thing.

The Update Angle grew out of a habit, not a business plan. I kept saving screenshots of update pages, carrier notices, and Samsung support documents, then comparing them against what readers were actually asking. The gap was always the same: the headline said a feature was coming, and the footnote quietly explained who could actually use it. That gap became this site.

Before The Update Angle

An Ordinary Galaxy User First

I didn't start in technology journalism. I started as a Galaxy owner who just wanted to know whether my phone would get the update everyone was talking about. So I read Samsung Newsroom, scrolled through support pages, checked carrier notices, and compared model numbers — the unglamorous work most coverage leaves out.

Over time, that habit turned into a method. I learned to separate four things that often get blended together: what Samsung announced, what a carrier confirmed, what a small group of users reported, and what was still unknown. The Update Angle exists to keep those categories apart.

Becoming an Independent Writer

After years of following Galaxy releases closely as a user, I moved into independent technology writing. I'm not a Samsung employee, a carrier representative, or a professional device reviewer with a lab. My credibility comes from long-term use, careful reading of primary sources, and a willingness to say "not confirmed" when the evidence isn't there.

That independence shapes the site's boundaries. The Update Angle is not affiliated with Samsung Electronics. I don't publish invented launches, prices, or rollout claims. When a story depends on a hands-on test, that test belongs to a named contributor with a documented device — it doesn't get written up as my fictional first-person experience.

How I Work

Primary Sources First

My reporting starts with Samsung Newsroom, Samsung product pages, Samsung Support, Android documentation, and U.S. carrier pages. I use credible external reporting when it adds information, but it's labeled as reported until independently confirmed.

The Five Questions

Every report is built around the same five questions:

  1. What happened, and when was it announced or confirmed?

  2. What changed compared with the previous product, version, or promise?

  3. Which Galaxy devices are involved?

  4. Can U.S. users buy, download, or use it now?

  5. What remains unconfirmed?

If a story can't answer these clearly, it isn't ready to publish.

Status Over Speculation

I treat stable release, beta, staged rollout, carrier rollout, user report, and full U.S. availability as different statuses. A handful of users receiving an update is not a nationwide rollout. A global announcement is not proof of U.S. availability. An old article doesn't get a new date just to look fresh.

Life Outside the Blog

I'm married to Sophie Ellis and have no children currently. I enjoy photography and cycling, and those interests occasionally show up in how I notice phone behavior — camera output, battery drain, navigation, connectivity, and weather-related quirks during rides and short trips.

Those interests are supporting context, not the site's main subject. The Update Angle is a Samsung Galaxy news and U.S. market updates publication. Personal observations appear only when they verify or illuminate a current Galaxy change.

Why This Site Exists

Most Galaxy coverage moves fast and stops at the announcement. The Update Angle slows down at the footnote. My editorial signature says it plainly:

"The headline is new. The footnote tells you who gets it."

That means I'll tell you what Samsung announced, what changed from the previous version or promise, which devices are involved, whether U.S. users can actually get it, and what's still unknown. I won't force every story into a purchase recommendation, and I won't manufacture controversy when the evidence shows a straightforward update.

Independence and Disclosure

The Update Angle is independent and not affiliated with Samsung Electronics. I disclose affiliate links, review units, sponsorships, and other commercial relationships. Editorial judgments are based on confirmed information, and corrections are labeled clearly rather than quietly rewritten.

If you have a correction, a U.S. availability report, or device information that helps verify a rollout, the Contact page is the right place to send it.
